Barbecue first, then the whiskey bars on East 6th
A proper Austin guys night starts hungry. The bus picks up at five thirty from a house in Brentwood or a bar patio in Allandale, and the first stop is meat: Terry Black's on Barton Springs Road, where the group eats brisket and ribs at a long table while the sun is still up. That dinner runs an hour, sometimes two if the beer list gets a workout, and the bus is waiting in the lot with the air cold. From there the natural move is east across the river to the whiskey rooms on East 6th, where Seven Grand has several hundred bottles on the wall and a back patio that fits a group of fifteen without a reservation on a weeknight. The ride between the two is fifteen minutes down Cesar Chavez with the skyline on the left, which is the moment everyone stops checking their phones and the night officially begins.
Red River after dark: Mohawk, Empire, and the shows that let out late
When the group is going for music, the bus points at the Red River Cultural District. Mohawk has a show most nights with an outdoor stage that puts the crowd under the sky, Empire Control Room is a block away, and Stubb's runs bigger touring acts on the outdoor stage when the weather cooperates. The bus drops on the corner, the group walks in together, and the driver moves a couple of blocks off Red River to wait, because the street itself is a parking lot from ten until the last encore. Shows on this block run late, often past midnight, and the sidewalk outside empties onto Red River all at once. A group that walks two blocks to where the bus is idling is home before the rideshare crowd has matched with a driver. Along the way there is time for a stop at one of the food trucks on East 7th, eaten on the bus with the lights low.

The honky-tonk detour and the South Lamar version
Some nights want less volume and more Texas. The Broken Spoke on South Lamar has been the honky-tonk since 1964, and a bus full of guys in boots pulling up for a two-step lesson and a Lone Star is a night that gets retold for years. South Lamar itself has enough within a mile for a whole evening: a sports bar for the game, a tap room, and a late kitchen. From there it is a straight shot back downtown or out to a Rainey Street patio for a last drink. This is also the version that works for a mixed-age group, a father-son outing before a wedding, or out-of-town friends who want the Austin they saw in a movie. The bus lets the night move at its own pace, and the driver, who has watched a lot of first two-step attempts from the cab, has an opinion about which bar has the better dance floor.

How big these groups run and how long the night lasts
Guys nights in our Austin records look a lot like everybody else's nights, with one difference: the group grows. An invite for twelve becomes fifteen by Thursday and seventeen by the pickup, which is why a 20- or 22-passenger bus is the common choice even when the original plan was smaller. The median Austin group is 15 passengers, and the median trip is five hours. Four hours is the single most common request at 46% of inquiries with a known length, but a night that includes dinner, two bars, and a food run usually stretches to five or six once the bus has to loop back to a suburb. Bachelor parties are the exception in every direction: they plan further ahead, they run two or three days instead of one night, and they book the bus for the Saturday and make their own way the rest of the weekend.

- •Cigar bars downtown allow smoking inside, and the bus does not, so that stop happens on the patio rather than on the ride.
Getting home when Sixth Street empties out
The end of a guys night is where the bus earns its keep. At two in the morning Sixth Street empties in one motion, the rideshare surge kicks in, and the guys who drove are now the problem. The bus is a block off the strip, the driver has a text from the one person who kept track of the group, and the ride home starts before the crowd has finished arguing about where to eat. A drive-through stop on the way is standard, and a bus full of burgers and quiet at 2:30 is a good ending. The drop-off loop runs from downtown out through whichever neighborhoods the group lives in, with the guys in Round Rock or Buda knowing they are last and settling in for a nap. Nobody gets left, nobody drives, and the group chat the next morning is about the night rather than about how somebody got home.
