New Year's Eve is the one night of the year when the ride matters more than the destination. Every bar downtown is full, Congress is closed for the fireworks, and every rideshare in the city is spoken for by twelve fifteen. A bus turns that into the best part of the night. The group stays together from the first toast to the last drop, and midnight can happen anywhere the group likes. December is the busiest month for nights out in our booking data, at about 20%.

How the night unfolds from a bus on December 31
The pickup is early, around seven, because on New Year's Eve nobody wants to be arriving anywhere at nine. The bus collects the group from a house in Allandale or a set of apartments off South Lamar, and the first ride downtown is the warm-up: the lights on, coats piled on a seat, the cooler open before the first stop. Dinner is at a restaurant on 2nd Street or in the Warehouse District that took a big reservation, and it runs long because the kitchen is slammed. By ten the group is back on the bus for the ride to wherever midnight is going to happen, and that ride is the moment of the night. The city is lit up, every patio the bus passes is packed, and the group has a seat, a drink, and a driver. After midnight the bus is the only thing in downtown Austin that is exactly where it said it would be, and the ride home over an empty MoPac at one thirty is the part people mention the next day.
Where to be at midnight, and what the fireworks look like from the bridge
Austin's fireworks go up over Lady Bird Lake from Auditorium Shores, and the best seats are anywhere on the south shore or on a rooftop downtown that looks that way. Groups on a bus have an option that walkers do not: a slow pass over the South First bridge a few minutes before twelve, with the whole show framed out the windows and the countdown coming from the phone plugged into the sound system. Others prefer a bar with a countdown, and the Rainey Street porches and the rooftop patios on West Sixth both do the ball drop with a crowd. A third kind of group wants a private countdown at a house in Tarrytown or a lake place near Lakeway, and the bus delivers everyone there from dinner and carries them back at two. About 86% of fourth-quarter dates in our Austin records land on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, but New Year's Eve is booked as its own night no matter which day of the week it falls on.

The suburb-to-downtown run and the ride home
A large share of our New Year's groups start well outside downtown. A house party in Round Rock, a group of couples in Cedar Park, a family reunion at a rental in Dripping Springs, all of them want the downtown night without anyone driving back on I-35 at two in the morning. The bus picks up at the house, makes the forty-minute run in with the party already going, and works the downtown plan for four or five hours. The ride home is the reason the plan exists. Every road out of the center is a patrol route that night, and a group on a bus with a driver simply does not have to think about it. Groups in the last three months of the year run larger than the rest of the calendar in our Austin records, with a median of 18 passengers and 32% of them above 25 people, which is why a 26- to 30-passenger bus is the one we reach for first on this date.

Formal parties, hotel ballrooms, and the Driskill at midnight
Some groups want New Year's Eve in a gown and a tux, and Austin obliges with ballroom parties at the Driskill, the Fairmont, and the hotels along Congress and 2nd Street. A bus for that night is a dressier affair: a stretch limo for a party of eight, a limo sprinter for twelve, a party bus with the lights set to one color for a bigger group. The ride from a house in Westlake down Bee Cave Road to the hotel entrance is fifteen minutes of everyone being careful with their drinks, and the drop happens at the side entrance the hotel has told the driver to use. Midnight happens inside under the chandeliers, and the pickup at one is on a side street rather than at the valet, where a bus would never fit. Party buses are still the request on about 76% of night-out inquiries in our booking data, but this is the night when the limos get their share.
