Bastrop: The Lost Pines and a Charming River Town

Bastrop is unlike anywhere else in Central Texas. While the surrounding landscape is typical Hill Country limestone and cedar, Bastrop sits within the Lost Pines -- an isolated pocket of loblolly pine forest that is one hundred miles separated from the nearest East Texas pine belt. Scientists believe these pines are remnants of a forest that once covered a much larger area, left behind as the climate changed over thousands of years. The result is a landscape that feels like East Texas transplanted to the Hill Country -- tall pines, sandy soil, and a distinctly different character from the surrounding terrain. Bastrop State Park, created in the 1930s and built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, protects a portion of the Lost Pines and features hiking trails, fishing ponds, a swimming pool, and historic CCC-built stone cabins. The park was severely impacted by a 2011 wildfire but has recovered beautifully, with new pine growth creating a landscape of renewal and resilience. Downtown Bastrop has experienced its own renewal. Main Street is now a thriving arts and dining district with restaurants like Maxine's (upscale comfort food in a historic building), Neighbor's Kitchen (farm-to-table dining), and Red House BBQ. Art galleries, boutiques, and the Bastrop Opera House complete the picture. The Colorado River runs through town, providing kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing opportunities. McKinney Roughs Nature Park, managed by the Lower Colorado River Authority, offers eleven hundred acres of trails along the river with dramatic bluffs and diverse ecosystems. A party bus from Austin to Bastrop covers thirty-eight minutes of scenic east-side driving. The bus handles the group logistics and provides a comfortable base for exploring the Lost Pines and downtown Bastrop. Call 512-900-8324.

Bastrop Adventures and BBQ Combinations

Bastrop groups frequently combine the Lost Pines experience with other east-side Austin destinations for a full-day party bus tour. The Bastrop + Elgin BBQ Tour: Elgin, the "Sausage Capital of Texas," is just twenty minutes north of Bastrop. Start with a morning hike at Bastrop State Park or McKinney Roughs, then bus to Elgin for lunch at Southside Market & Barbeque (famous hot sausage links since 1882) or Meyer's Elgin Smokehouse. The combination of Lost Pines nature and Elgin sausage is a distinctly Central Texas experience. The Bastrop River Day: Kayak or paddleboard the Colorado River through downtown Bastrop with one of several outfitters that offer rentals and shuttles. The bus drops the group at the put-in point and picks them up at the take-out, carrying dry clothes and gear. After the paddle, walk Main Street for lunch and gallery browsing. The Hyatt Lost Pines Experience: Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort is a world-class property featuring a spa, championship golf course, horseback riding, and riverside dining. Corporate groups and luxury celebrations book the bus for transportation to the resort. Most Bastrop bookings run five to seven hours. The bus handles the thirty-eight-minute drive from Austin, waits during activities, and provides a comfortable return trip. Groups of ten to twenty use our party buses. Corporate and family groups of twenty-five to fifty book coach buses. Call 512-900-8324 to book your Bastrop adventure. Spring and fall offer the best weather for outdoor activities, but the Lost Pines are beautiful year-round.
