The company party lands on a Thursday, the friends' holiday night lands on a Saturday, the family wants to see the lights on a school night, and the whole city is doing the same three things. A bus fits all of them. December is the busiest month for company events in our booking data, at about 19% of corporate requests, and the busiest for nights out at 20%. The company party, from the office to the last bar
The office holiday party on a bus starts at the end of a workday. The group gathers in the lobby at the Domain or on Congress around five thirty, still in work clothes, and the bus pulls up with the lights on and the coolers stocked. The ride to dinner is the first hour of the party, and it is the hour when people from different teams end up talking. The restaurant is usually downtown, a private room on 2nd Street or a long table on East Sixth, and the bus waits nearby while the toasts happen. The second half is the part the company would never have planned without the bus: a patio on Rainey, a karaoke room, or a rooftop on West Sixth, then a run back to the office garage or a set of drops near people's homes. The median company group in our booking data is 20 passengers, and only 37% of company dates land on a Friday or Saturday, so a Wednesday in December is the most common version of this night.
Ugly sweaters, Miracle bars, and a friends' night in December
The friends' version of the Christmas bus is the loudest. Fifteen people in sweaters with lights sewn into them, a playlist of holiday songs that gets abandoned after two, and a route that hits the pop-up holiday bars downtown, where the drinks come in mugs shaped like reindeer and the line is out the door by eight. The bus is what makes a pop-up bar work for a group, because the driver drops at the corner, the group waits for its turn, and everyone piles back on together for the ride to the next stop. East Austin picks up the second half of the night, with the patios on East Sixth strung with lights and the White Horse doing its usual thing under a Santa hat. December Saturdays are the tightest of the quarter, and a friends' holiday night lands there most often, which is why the groups who reach out in early November get the 18- or 20-passenger bus they pictured while the ones who wait take a bigger or smaller one.

The family lights ride, with the grandparents and the kids
A December bus with three generations on it is a slower, sweeter ride. The family boards in Circle C or Steiner Ranch after dinner at home, hot chocolate in travel mugs, and the bus rolls toward the displays that make Austin feel like December. Mozart's on Lake Austin Boulevard runs a light show on the deck every half hour, and the drive along the water to get there is dark enough that the show lands. The 37th Street lights in Hyde Park are a walk down a block of houses that have been doing this for decades, with the bus waiting on Guadalupe. Neighborhoods like Circle C and Avery Ranch have their own streets that go all out, and a driver who knows them turns a family ride into a slow parade. The forward seats of an executive sprinter or a small shuttle are the better fit for this ride, because a child in a car seat and a grandparent with a cane both do better facing forward with the sound system playing carols at a talking volume.

A Christmas day trip into the Hill Country
Families with relatives in town for the week often want a day out rather than a night out, and December is the best month for a Hill Country loop on a bus. The ride west on US-290 is cold and clear, with the trees bare and the limestone showing, and the courthouse square in Johnson City is wrapped in more than a million lights from the Friday after Thanksgiving through the new year. A bus gets there in about an hour from central Austin, waits while the family walks the square with coffee, and carries everyone to a late lunch at a winery or a barbecue place on the way back. Wimberley and Dripping Springs both light their main streets too, and a loop that hits one of them on the return has the family home by eight. Fourth-quarter groups in our Austin records have the largest share of very big parties, with 18% above 40 passengers, and a family holiday outing on a coach with a restroom is exactly the kind of day that pushes into that range.
