Georgetown offers a surprising variety of activities for a city its size, making it an excellent day-trip destination from Austin. Blue Hole Park: This spring-fed swimming hole is Georgetown's most popular outdoor attraction. The water is crystal clear, seventy-three degrees year-round, and surrounded by towering limestone bluffs and cypress trees. During summer, reservations are required and slots fill up fast. A party bus drops the group at the park entrance -- no parking stress. Inner Space Cavern: Located off I-35 on the north side of Georgetown, this cave system features dramatic stalactites, stalagmites, and Ice Age fossil beds. Guided tours last forty-five to ninety minutes and maintain a comfortable seventy-two degrees underground -- a welcome escape from summer heat. Georgetown Square: The square deserves at least two hours of exploration. Highlights include The Escape (handmade gifts and home decor), Georgetown Antique Mall, Dos Salsas (excellent Tex-Mex), Wildfire (farm-to-table dining), and Sweet Lemon Kitchen. Saturday mornings feature a farmers market on the courthouse lawn. Berry Springs Park: A seventy-acre park on the west side of Georgetown with a natural spring-fed pool, fishing ponds, nature trails, and picnic areas. It is less crowded than Blue Hole and equally beautiful. San Gabriel River Trail: Fifteen-plus miles of paved and unpaved trails along the San Gabriel River, connecting parks and natural areas throughout Georgetown. Groups that enjoy walking or biking can spend a full morning on the trails. Southwestern University: The oldest university in Texas, founded in 1840. The campus features beautiful architecture, the Sarofim School of Fine Arts, and a peaceful atmosphere for walking.
