UT commencement weekend from a seat above the crowd
On the third weekend of May the university empties its colleges into DKR, the Bass Concert Hall, and a dozen smaller halls over two days, and the streets around campus turn into a slow parade of families holding flowers. Riding through it on a bus instead of circling for a garage spot changes the whole afternoon. The family boards at a hotel near the Domain or on I-35, the driver works down Guadalupe with the Drag on one side and the Tower on the other, and the graduate gets dropped at the ceremony while everyone else stays cool. Afterward the pickup happens on a wide street a few blocks off campus, the graduate climbs on in the robe, and the whole family is together for the first time all day. The ride to dinner is the reunion. The evening ceremony ends with the Tower lit orange, and a bus rolling south down Guadalupe with it framed in the back window is the picture the grandparents keep.
The graduation dinner, and why it runs long
Graduation dinners in Austin do not stay on schedule, and a bus is the reason that stops mattering. The reservation is for seven at Fogo de Chão on 2nd Street or a long table on the patio at the Salt Lick in Driftwood, and by the time the toasts are done and the cousins have ordered a second dessert it is nine thirty. The driver is parked and waiting, not summoned in three batches. For families with relatives who cannot handle a long walk, a small shuttle or executive sprinter with forward seats and a low step works better than a party bus, and the driver can pull right up to the restaurant door on a side street. For a group that wants a view, The Oasis on Lake Travis at sunset in May turns the dinner into an outing, with the ride out RM 2222 through the hills doing half the entertaining. High school graduations from Cedar Park to Kyle
The high school version fills the same May weekends from a different direction. Ceremonies happen at Moody Center, at the H-E-B Center in Cedar Park, and at Strahan Arena at Texas State in San Marcos for the Hays County schools, and each one puts a few thousand families on the same roads at the same hour. A bus for a high school graduate is usually a family bus: parents, siblings, grandparents, and the neighbors who watched the kid grow up, riding from Round Rock or Buda to the ceremony and on to a dinner at the Domain or a backyard party afterward. The ride home is where the graduate opens the cards. Some families turn the evening over to the graduate's friends after dinner, and the same bus that carried the grandparents to the ceremony becomes a night bus with the lights on for a run to a bowling alley, a Topgolf bay on Burnet Road, or a late swim at a house on Lake Travis.

The friends' night, and the quieter December version
When the family part is over, the graduate's friends want their own night, and for a college class it is one of the last nights the whole group is in Austin. The bus picks up at an apartment in West Campus or a house in Hyde Park around nine, and the run down to Rainey Street or East Sixth is a rolling send-off with the playlist that got everyone through finals. Nobody is driving, and nobody is stranded on the other side of I-35 at last call. The December graduation, which UT and Texas State both hold, is a different animal. Austin is cold and half-empty, the ceremonies are smaller, and there is far less competition for a Saturday bus.
