The short version
Austin City Limits Music Festival takes over Zilker Park for two weekends in October, and for those six days the south side of the river is the whole city. The grass is full, Barton Springs Road is closed, and every bar from South Lamar to South Congress is packed with festival wristbands. Getting there is easy at noon and impossible at eleven, which is why groups who have done it once book a bus the second time. The pickup after the last set is what makes it worth it.

The festival day from the bus
ACL groups usually gather around one. The bus fills at a house in Round Rock, a hotel in the Domain, or a driveway in Westlake, and the ride down MoPac to the Zilker side is thirty minutes of sunscreen, wristband checks, and a playlist of the bands everyone wants to catch. The drop is on the South Lamar or Barton Springs Road edge, wherever the festival has left room for a vehicle that year, and the group walks in with the crowd. From there it is eight hours of shows, food trucks, and the long field between the two big stages. The bus is either sent home for the afternoon or held nearby for a group that plans to leave for dinner and come back. When the headliner ends, the exit from Zilker is a river of people that takes forty-five minutes to reach South Lamar on foot. A bus waiting at an agreed corner on the Lamar side is the difference between a night that ends at eleven thirty and one that ends at one.
Rental houses, out-of-town friends, and the kids day
ACL brings people who do not live here. A group of college friends rents a house in Bouldin Creek or Travis Heights for the weekend and needs a ride to the park each day and to the late shows each night. A family with teenagers comes in from Houston and stays near the airport. Both want a driver who knows the south side, because the rental house is a fifteen-minute walk from the gate in theory and a forty-minute one in the heat with a cooler. The Sunday of each weekend is the family day, with the kids area running all afternoon, and a shuttle bus with forward seats and room for strollers suits that crowd better than the party bus the Friday group wanted. Late shows, South Lamar bars, and the night after the park
The festival does not end when Zilker closes. Official late-night shows run at Stubb's, Emo's, and ACL Live downtown, with the artists who played the park at four playing a club at midnight. A party bus that picks the group up on South Lamar at ten can have them at a Red River venue by ten thirty, which no rideshare can promise on that night. Other groups skip the late show and head for the patios on South Lamar or South Congress, where the festival crowd spends the hours after the headliner, or back to the rental house for a pool and a quieter night. The ride from the park is where the group compares who saw what, and the LED lighting and the sound system make it a second show. Weekend two is the cooler of the two, often with the first front of the fall, and the ride home at midnight in the mid-fifties is when everyone is glad their jacket rode along in the bus.

Which vehicle for which kind of ACL group
A group of ten friends with wristbands rides best in a limo sprinter: easy to park on the south side, leather seating, and a driver who can hold near Lamar and Barton Springs while the group walks out. Groups of sixteen to twenty are the classic party bus, with the wrap-around seating and the coolers doing their work on the way in and the way out. Groups that grow past thirty, a whole office or a big rental-house reunion, ride a 40-passenger shuttle with overhead storage for blankets, hats, and the clear bags the festival requires. Whatever the size, the seats that matter most are the ones nobody sits in: a couple of open spots for the bags, jackets, and the collapsible chairs that most of the group carries in and half of them carry out. Groups who come for both weekends often keep the same vehicle for both, which makes the second weekend feel like a routine rather than a plan.

Two ACL weekends, two different plans
Weekend one and weekend two of ACL look the same on the lineup and different on the ground. Weekend one is usually still hot, the Saturday crowd is bigger, and the city's traffic plan is being tested for the first time that year, so the drop and pickup zones on South Lamar and around Barton Springs Road run slower. Weekend two often brings the first cold front, the Sunday crowd thins, and the exits move faster because everyone, including the drivers, has done it once. That is why we treat the two weekends as separate bookings with separate meeting points. For groups coming from north of the river, the downtown drop at Republic Square and the official shuttle is the low-stress version: the bus never touches the Zilker closures and picks up downtown after the headliner. For groups from Buda, Kyle, Dripping Springs, or anywhere south, a South Lamar drop and a walk in is faster both ways. Pick the version that matches where the group sleeps, then hold the same meeting point for the whole day so nobody is guessing at 10:15 p.m.
