A Johnson City Wine Day That Fits Between Opening and Last Pour

The tasting rooms set the clock. Most open at 11 or noon and stop pouring by 5, so a Johnson City wine day from Austin starts with a 9:45 AM pickup, an hour on US-290 west through Oak Hill and Dripping Springs, and a first stop on Main Street right as the doors open. Tasting rooms along US-290 between Johnson City and Hye sit 10 to 15 minutes apart, and a proper flight with a walk around the grounds takes an hour. Fredericksburg Main Street is another 30 minutes west of Johnson City, so a day that includes it usually drops to one Johnson City stop and pushes the return to 8 PM. If the goal is wineries, the Hye and Stonewall stretch between the two towns gives you the same producers without the drive into Fredericksburg traffic. If the goal is shopping and a German dinner, go all the way.
The falls overlook has a paved lot that fits a bus, and the day-use pass is a Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation we recommend making online ahead, because the park caps visitors on busy weekends. The drive from Johnson City is 15 minutes east on RM 2766. The trail down to the river is rocky, so this is a sneakers stop, and the bus holds at the lot while you hike.
