A reunion Saturday at McKinney Falls from the shuttle window
The Saturday of most reunions is a park day, and McKinney Falls is the one Austin families pick because it is fifteen minutes from the airport hotels and has water the kids can stand in. The shuttle leaves the hotel at ten with coolers in the overhead racks and the youngest cousins already asking how long. The pavilion sits under old cypress trees near the lower falls, and by eleven the folding tables are covered in brisket and potato salad while the teenagers find the creek. The bus does not just sit there. It makes a midday run back to the hotel with the great-grandparents and the toddlers who need naps, then comes back at four for everyone else, sunburned and happy. Why reunions plan earlier than almost anything else we do
Families are the group most likely to ask months ahead. About 18% of Austin inquiries in our records arrive 90 or more days before the date, and reunions sit squarely in that share because the hotel block, the pavilion reservation, and the flights all get settled first. Summer is the most common season, with July through September carrying about 19% of Austin inquiries, though the November reunions around Thanksgiving are the ones with the best weather. The vehicle question is mostly about size. Groups of 31 to 40 are about 4% of Austin inquiries, and a family that lands there rides a 36- or 40-passenger shuttle with room for strollers and coolers. Over 40 relatives and it becomes a full coach with luggage bays and a restroom, or two shuttles when the family splits into a park crowd and a museum crowd on the same afternoon. Leaving a handful of seats open for the cooler and the car seats keeps everyone comfortable across a long day.
